Joseph - White Flag

| Kerri

Noises closing in from all sides
Warning all the ways to die
They say "you'd better give up
You'd better give up"
I say
"I'll never give up, I'll never give up"

I'll be an army, no you're
Not gonna stop me gettin'
Through
I'll sing a marching song and
Stomp through the halls louder than
You

I could surrender but I'd
Just be pretending, no I'd
Rather be dead than live a lie
Burn the white flag

For Memorial Day, I thought of this song about standing your ground. I'm more of a "stick flowers in your guns" gal generally, but agree there are things we must fight for. For the record, the lyrics aren't meant to be about war anyway. Lead singer/songwriter Natalie Closner says it's actually about not giving in to fear mongering. Joseph is a trio of sisters out of Portland, Oregon. This track is from their 2016 album I'm Alone, No You're Not - their first release on Dave Matthew's label (ATO Records).

Futureheads - Hounds of Love

| Keith
I found a fox
Caught by dogs
He let me take him in my hands
His little heart
It beats so fast
And I'm ashamed of running away
From nothing real
I just can't deal with this
But I'm still afraid to be there
Among your hounds of love
And feel your arms surround me
I've always been a coward
And never know what's good for me

It's all Kate Bush and covers over here! This past weekend Kerri and I got to talking about (and listening to) covers since she posted another Kate Bush track that also has a terrific cover song Friday. Placebo's version of "Running Up That Hill" is ace. In addition to being a terrific and original act, Placebo are pretty adept when it comes to covers. Through the course of that afternoon, we landed on the idea of doing a covers week, and here's our first song, from a band I've been longing to share on TMIS. It's probably not a coincidence that the song comes from Kate Bush and her landmark album.

Sunderland's Futureheads, who, back in 2004, released this amazing rendition of Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love". The rest of that debut album is classic indie dance/rock gold as well.

Monogrenade - Ce soir

| Keith
Ce soir j'te fait danser
J'te jure j'te fait danser
J'tai pas oublié
C'est juste que ça me hante
Que tu me vois étrange
Qu'un jour on se réveille

I've been wanting to share this wonderful song from Montreal's Monogranade for awhile now. They do have an English version of the song, "We Will Be Free" but even though I can't understand a lick of it, I like the original French. Most of their other music has a similar atmospheric and sophisticated feel that's really chill.

The stop-motion video for "Ce soir" is also excellent. Check it out:
