Mitski - Your Best American Girl

| Kerri

If I could, I'd be your little spoon
And kiss your fingers forevermore
But, big spoon, you have so much to do
And I have nothing ahead of me
You're the sun, you've never seen the night
But you hear its song from the morning birds
Well I'm not the moon, I'm not even a star
But awake at night I'll be singing to the birds

Don't wait for me, I can't come

Your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me
But I do, I think I do
And you're an all-American boy
I guess I couldn't help trying to be your best American girl

You're the one
You're all I ever wanted
I think I'll regret this

Mitski says this song was intensely personal to her; she didn't expect it to resonate with anyone. And yet it's by far her biggest hit. Mitski was raised in the Congo, Japan, Turkey, and attended college in New York -- I can imagine it would be easy to feel like you don't fit in. How lucky we are that she decided to make music.

Mount Saint - Excuses

| Kerri
If I'm a liar
You're the words I'll never speak
On and on the truth that keeps you from sleep
It feels like fire
Hot and burning everything
On and on it spreads and catch on your sheets
And I know
I shouldn't make excuses
But I
I'm on the road

Mount Saint was an LA-based indie pop band that released one EP, last year, and it was lovely. This was my favorite of those tracks. Earlier this month, they officially announced that they have split up, but good news is there are two new indie bands to follow:  Strange Joy and Tolman (Mount Saint singer with her husband, the drummer from The Moth and The Flame and both formerly part of Imagine Dragons. Bonus song embedded below).

The Fame Riot - Heart Stray

| Kerri
She's running out of breath this time
(oooooh)
I know what I want but it's bringing me down
Said, I know what you want and it's bringing me down
Said, I've got this song racing through my head
'Cause I know what you want when you know when I'm there

I heard this song when it was first released on Spotify, liked it, but was kind of sitting on it, waiting to see what else might come from this band. Oh, but these gender-bending clean-but-glam brothers (Liz and Shazam) from Tacoma, Washington don't want to be called a band. Their website and Facebook page have the same description: "The Fame Riot is not a band; it's a religion. The two brothers are at the forefront of a shift in musical style and culture, drawing influence from the last 4 decades of rock, pop, electronica, disco, and everything in-between." Well then. I'm not one for religion but I do get down to this song, and imagine their live set is tremendously entertaining.
