Emperor X - Sad React

| Keith

Emperor X is all over the place. /SMH

“Sad React” is the latest from witty and enigmatic singer Chad Matheny and it’s a terrific example of what he does best; blending clever lyrics with extremely catchy, minimal yet complicated pop vibes. The subject this time is social media and the trials and tribulations of our reactions to it. It also has a giant fuck you ending, so be warned. Give it a listen, and if you’re hooked, as I was when I first discovered him, give some of his older stuff a listen. I particularly love “Allahu Akbar” (no it’s not a trap), “Erica Western Teleport” and the low-key epic “€30,000”.

Miya Folick - Cost Your Love

| Keith

I had the great fortune to see Miya Folick in a very small, intimate venue during SXSW (the indoor stage at Cheer Up Charlie’s) and was blown away by her presence, voice and performance. Now, to be completely transparent, her album Premonitions had been on very heavy rotation for me and I see it as one of the top highlights of 2018, so I had high expectations. Which were easily exceeded. If you’ve not heard her, well now’s your chance.

Snow Patrol - Empress

| Kerri

Whoops I made a note to add this song to the ol’ blog LAST MAY, and just getting around to it now. We were fortunate to see Snow Patrol (with openers We Are Scientists!) a few days ago when the Wildness Tour came through Austin and this was one of just three “new” songs in their set. Thanks for the reminder, lads! For the record, if you’re on the fence about seeing them for some reason, you should know that, even with a cold, Gary Lightbody sounds amazing - like there is truly no production on his voice when they make their records. It was a fantastic show.
